Post #4 Semiotics Ads

Print Ad: Nikon
Denotations: 


  • A camera.
  • A yellow box inside of a black box.
  • Nikon color (yellow) as background


Connotation:



  • The poster is quite simple and clearly express the word "easy".
  • The yellow box and the black box look like a switch. It simply describe that using the Nikon camera is as easy as click a switch. 
 Mythology


  • The poster used it design to annotate the word "easy".



Billboard Ad: Colgate


Denotations:

  • A smiling mouth
  • Red lips and white teeth
  • a toothpaste as light.

Connotation:

  • Colgate is advertising its toothpaste.
  • Using the toothpaste as light on the one tooth means the toothpaste can make your teeth more white and shine. 
Mythology:

  • Using the toothpaste as light is why the designer is so smart. The light only covered one tooth. Comparing with other teeth, the one under the light of Colgate is more white and pretty.


Video Ad: Apple iPhone 5S - Dream

Denotations:

  • A man is using iPhone to test wind speed.
  • A woman is using iPhone to authenticate a diamond.
  • A woman is using iPhone to talk to her patients who speak different language.
  • A pilot is using iPhone to navigate her flight.
  • Fire department is using iPhone to locate emergency locale.
  • An wall painting artist is using iPhone to project the image on the wall.
  • "You are more powerful than you think."
Connotation:

  • In every scenes, iPhone is the only tools that helps these people finish their jobs. It can be qualified every jobs.

Mythology:

  • Apple declares the iPhone 5S is the most powerful tool that people can use. 
  • This amazing device can replace every tools.

Post #3 Super Bowl 2015

Super Bowl 2015 is here. The ad of Super Bowl that I like is the Domestic Violence PSA by Nomore.org. The Ad is quite helpful and it sends a useful message for people's safety. It says that people can call 911 even in a difficult situation when they hard to speak. The 911 will deal with the information from your messages and ask you some questions in order to help you and keep you safe. Most of people don't know that they can call 911 when they cannot speak. This is more like a public service advertising than a marketing advertising. By knowing this information will save your life sometimes. Comparing to every other ads, I like this one the most for its purpose.

Post#2: Favorite Ad Agency

Advertising Agency is a medium between products and consumers. A company doesn't have its own ad agency so they will look for an advertising agency to the commercial and advertise. After class on Wednesday, I searched many commercials presented by famous company. One commercial that brought my attention is the Uncle Drew presented by Pepsi Max. It is produced by Davie Brown Entertainment. The idea of this commercial is to find an engaging way to promote Pepsi Max, Pepsi's "zero-calorie cola in disguise". This 5-minute video featuring a compelling character - Uncle Drew - Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving, the youngest player in the NBA, disguised as an elderly, gray-haired old-school hoopster who surprises onlookers at a pick-up basketball game. The video had nearly 14 million views and 50,000 likes on YouTube. It is a really successful commercial for Pepsi Max. It sent the message for its product that tells people Pepsi can be 0 calorie. With a such interesting story told by this commercial, it teaches people lesson. The idea by Davie Brown Entertainment is super great.

Post#1: Interesting in Advertising

Although I am not a student who major in advertising, I still have a lot of interesting in advertising. I am a Graphic Design student. I believe Graphic Design and Advertising are related somehow. I am sure that knowledge about advertising will be quite helpful to my design career. Advertising is a way to make a product famous and dig any types of clients and consumers. It requires ad agency to communicate with consumers, understand what consumers' demand, and relate the product to their demand in order to advertise the product. It is quite important to me because a part of Graphic Design is almost doing the same thing. Designers use pictures and words to communicate with audiences. It can be a method to advertise.
